I decided to tell this story that I got years ago! I decided to record it before I forget it. I found Mike hiding in a tree with a hundred Zombies trying to get him and make a lunch out of him…
I rescued him and then as we drank a cup of delicious coffee, (yes he had instant coffee and a little fire later and boiling water, we had a treat) he then told me his story…
Hi this is Mike and I am telling Stryker here my story of the beginning of the Zombie Virus attack…
I worked the coal mines in Virginia and I remember clearly the day that the Zombie Virus attacked and everyone in the coal mine with me became Zombies…
I always worked the graveyard shift and this day was no exception. The exception was that I was deep in the mine, as deep as you can get! I was at the end of the deepest tunnel that we had dug several months ago and I was checking it out for weakness. We had just had a cave in and now we had to check all tunnels…
I remember that I was at the farthest end of the tunnel and was checking out the ceiling structure and load bearing conditions, when the lights went out. Now in a mining tunnel or any deep cave for that matter, darkness is an understatement. It was so dark that you could cut it with a knife. I really hated when the power went out and it went out very rarely. They worked hard to make sure that lights never go off…
I turned the helmet light on and since that beam hardly touched the inky blackness. I pulled out my big flashlight and that made things better. I decided to finish my inspection, I had enough light and it felt as if the air flow was still working. That is more important than lights. Ventilation…
Now I spent about an hour and finished my work. I then started to worry, the power was still out! That was unusual and so I tried to call at the nearest emergency box, a hard wired phone system. No one answered and that was just plain wrong. Now I worried and started to hurry back to the main tunnel, where I left 30 men working on a new shaft…
I picked my way slowly through the new rubble from the tunneling a few months ago and as I neared what was the main tunnel entrance, I heard something strange. It was strange because I heard nothing! That is right no noise at all…
I stepped into the main tunnel and found silence and 30 dead men. Not just dead, but decapitated and chewed into pieces. It looked like a wold animal had eaten the dead men after they had been decapitated. Some had even been chopped into 20 or 30 pieces…
At that point I had thought that something ate them after they died. Later I realized that they hate been eaten first and then became Zombies and then had their heads cut off…
So I was looking for a wild animal or something, not a Zombie! Actually I was correct, because in an hour of wandering the tunnels, I found a crazy wild man by the name of Matt Burris and he was babbling something about Zombies and then killed himself as he pointed to a bite on his arm…
I thought, did this man kill all these people? Then I heard a noise down a side tunnel and it sound like the moan made by a drilling machine that is shutting down. It is a lonesome moaning wail that can really cause the hairs to stand up on your skin as you hear it…
I heard it again and thought to myself that someone is still working and has no idea that so many are dead. I ran as fast as I could down the side tunnel…
I found the emergency power switch and pulled the lever. I knew that would light up the tunnel for a short while and allow me to see what is going on in here. As I stepped back from the switch and the power sputtered and took hold on the lights in the tunnel ceiling. Someone grabbed me from behind…
I turned and this is when lady luck was with me. I came face to face with a Zombie and he tried to bite me. All he bit was the collar of my coat I had on and as he ripped away the collar, that was all I needed to get my brain in gear and everything that I have seen and done in the last few hours, jelled together and screamed Zombies at me…
Time to be rational was over and as I realized 10 to 12 Zombies were shuffling toward me, in the new found light. I picked up a rock boring tool as I call it! It is a long drill bit rod for rock drills and is long and heavy. I used it as a bludgeon and smashed every head in the tunnel that tried to eat me…
As I panted with the exertion and could feel my heart ready to explode out from my chest. I finally said out loud, “What the Hell was that?” As the words echoed in the tunnel, I heard another moan and realized that all 500 men in the tunnels must be Zombies or dead…
I grabbed a drill for each hand and after gathering all the helmet light batteries that I could carry, I went to try to make it to the exit and then the surface…
To make a long story short! You see that I am still alive and that I must have made it out of the mine. I went tunnel to tunnel and switched on the emergency power to each one. Each tunnel that I had to transverse was a battle zone and I am so thankful that Zombies are just like they are in a movie. I beat Zombie brains until I was covered in their blood…
I finally remember seeing the huge elevator to the surface. I was about 3000 feet below the surface and this was the only way to the top and fresh air. I had no idea that the whole world was infected and could have careless at that point. I just wanted to get out of this Zombie tomb…
As the emergency power was fading in the main tunnel, I ran and jumped upon the elevator platform. The elevator would not move, but I knew how to redirect the emergency power to the elevator. After 3 more dead Zombies trying to get me! I finally got the elevator to start slowly inching itself upwards. I just hoped that there was enough juice left to get to the surface. I kicked myself for tuning on all the lights in the tunnels…
I got to about five feet from the top and the elevator stopped. All I could hear was a moan from the motor and I knew that the power was gone. I climbed up the side bars and got out of the shaft. The sun was shining and that first breath of fresh air was wonderful, well at least until I looked around. Death was everywhere…
I made it too my home and found Zombies for a family and friends. You see I have always been considered a freak in these parts, I have bright green eyes and everyone else around has bronze and brown eyes. My two kids and wife were brown eyed and my eyes are so green that people say they can see me from a mile away…
I guess they would wish to have these green eyes now…
