Short Story 42: Story by Newt and his doggy…

Newt was a little guy! I don’t mean a child, I mean a little guy! Like a midget. but even smaller. He was the smallest adult that survived the Zombie Virus and his big green eyes are expressive and full of hope for the world. His best buddy is a big mutt that is part German Shepard. He just calls him “Doggy”…

Here is his story…

Hi I am Newt,

I am a little guy, in fact in most of the world I am known as a tiny midget! I have green eyes and that is the start of this story…

I hated my green eyes and I hated my green eyes more than being a tiny little guy. So I had made arrangements to have my eye color changed. No not just put in contacts a different color, but have the eye actually changed in color…

I found a doctor that said he could do just what I wanted and I would have beautiful blue eyes when I took the bandages off in two weeks after the operation. So I agreed and went to the doctors office very early in the morning. The same morning that this terrible Zombie Virus hit the world…

The doctor and his nurse greeted me and all was normal. It was 5am and the world had not woke yet. I remember that I sat in a chair that looked a lot like a dentist chair and I felt very tiny in that chair. I really think that my size is what saved me later. No one saw me in the chair…

The doctor said after giving me a shot in the arm, “Count to a hundred for me!”

I started to count and do not remember anything after 23, 24, 2….

I awoke what was many hours later and realized that I was still in the dentist type chair. I sat still and allowed myself to gather my wits about me and I realized that I was able to see just fine. I also realized that I did not hurt. Wow I thought, this guy is really good and as I sat there waking up, I heard a strange noise…

I am sure that you have heard this before, but you know that terrible noise that Zombies make? That terrible moaning sound that reaches into your soul and you just know that an undead Zombie is searching for food. I really understand now that Zombies and humans are interconnected in many ways. One of the connections is that moan and it is a imbalance of the Zombies death and a humans weakness to fight off that death…

As I was contemplating that moan, I was stunned when the nurse walked or should I say shuffled around in front of my chair. She had a finger of someone and was chewing on it like a dog chews on a bone…

I froze still and then heard a moan behind me. I kept myself from making any noise and was rewarded with the doctor shuffling toward the nurse and they ensued with a fight over the finger. Finally the doctor turned and looked right at me and as he shuffled closer, I could see him trying to focus his eyes on me. It was strange his eyes that had been so clear and black earlier, were now milky white. It was obvious that he could not see very well and that, plus my size saved me for that minute…

He turned back to the nurse who had moaned as she munched that finger and I took advantage of the situation. On a tray next to me was a long thin steel ice pick looking thing. It had a good handle on it and the doctor was right there in front of me. I could leap on his head and drive this ice picky thing into his right temple. I knew that Zombies can only be killed by killing the brain…

With out thinking anymore, I grabbed that weapon and leaped. I was perfection in motion and scratch one Zombie Doctor. He hit the ground and only jerked once in his second death. I had leaped back to the chair before the doctor fell and stood there waiting for the nurse…

The nurse did not even look my way, as she was too interested in munching on that finger. I wondered whose finger it was, as the doctor had all his and I was interrupted with a moan of a alive person from the floor under my chair. I looked over the edge and saw a woman who was still alive and not a Zombie. She then asked me to kill her as she was turning into a Zombie…

I still had my ice picky thingy and once again I went with the flow of life and leaped on top of that woman’s head and drove the point into her temple. After scrambling her brains with my special weapon, I looked up and saw that the nurse Zombie never looked up. Damn that finger must be awful good…

The door to the office was open and I decided that getting my eye color changed was not going to happen and it was time to vacate the premises and see what is happening else where in the world…

I was soon to find out that being a little guy was a big help in more ways than not…

I finally made it too the street and I knew that I needed to get a decent weapon. For most Zombies will not bend over and let me kill them with a ice picky thingy. So when I got outside I stayed low to the ground and stayed near the walls of the buildings. I went under cars and finally found what I needed to kill Zombies with…

I found a half eaten cop and still in his holster was a 10mm Glock and 5 clips full of ammo. He never even got a shot off before the Zombies ate him and thank goodness Zombies do not use guns…

I gathered the weapon and ammo and sat under a car. (I told you I am a little guy!) Then did some thinking. While I was thinking a dog crawled under the car with me and was as surprised as I was. I held the gun up and watched for any doggy Zombie signs. He looked at me with teeth bared and looked for human Zombie signs. We both lowered our weapons as we realized that we were the real McCoy, well except I was small enough to ride the doggy…

Ride the doggy? That is it and I hopped on his back after we got out from under the car and I held on to his collar that he had on. I said, “Run boy, Run!” and he did. He ran like the wind and we escaped the city and ended up in the woods…

Now it was the longest trip out of town I ever had. He ran and ran and ran and I shot Zombies between the eyes. Finally I ran out of bullets and with luck we ran out of city…

Doggy is my best buddy and him and I have taken on more than a few Zombies…

I guess that is enough, because I could go on forever…

I want to add though that doggy and I are doing good and we have 20 friends hidden in the woods. They have all been saved from Zombies at one time or another. We stick together and they asked me to be the leader. Strange huh a little guy being the boss?

So now we are trying to set up another place to live and make it more permanent. We want to start trying to have a life of peace and quiet. The issue is that Zombies are so plentiful and they are so hungry that you never can let your guard down…

Winter is coming and the Zombies will freeze. Then we are going to clean house on these Zombies. Build a fortress and try to be human again and not scared rabbits running all the time…

I think we are going to make it and we will have a better world from it all…

Goodbye…

Newt…

P.S. – I am so glad I have green eyes…
